It's not for everyone. Built to Serve Those Who Serve™

Officer Media Talking Points
9mm 95 Grain – Tactical Olfactory Disruption Round

It disrupts with intention. It saturates with speed. It redirects with clarity. And it protects with purpose.

Olfact X™ is a Less-Lethall tactical round engineered to disrupt threat coordination through targeted olfactory overload. It delivers a fast-acting sensory payload that overwhelms the target’s sense of smell, triggering confusion, disorientation, and temporary withdrawal. Designed for use in high-risk environments where conventional tools may be ineffective or escalate danger.

“This round doesn’t overpower—it interrupts. It gives us a moment to act decisively and safely.”

Core Messaging Themes

1. Less-Lethall Innovation with Tactical Precision

  • Olfact X™ is part of a new generation of sensory disruption tools that prioritize safety and control.
  • It offers a humane alternative to chemical irritants or kinetic force, reducing risk to officers, suspects, and bystanders.
  • The round is non-toxic, non-flammable, and designed for rapid dissipation in ventilated environments.
  • “It’s not about causing pain—it’s about creating space. Olfact X™ helps us de-escalate without delay.”

2. Mission-Specific Deployment
This round is reserved for tactical teams operating under strict protocols, not for routine patrol or crowd control.
Common deployment scenarios include:

  • Barricaded suspects
  • Hostage rescue operations
  • Confined-space entries
  • High-risk warrant service

Officers are trained to deploy Olfact X™ only when verbal commands and conventional tools have proven insufficient.

“We use it when lives are on the line and seconds matter.”

3. Safety, Training, and Oversight
All deployments are governed by agency SOPs and reviewed post-incident.
Officers undergo specialized training in:

  • Round handling and containment
  • PPE protocols
  • Ventilation and aftercare procedure

ForseMark provides documentation templates, training modules, and community engagement resources to support transparency.

“Every use is documented, reviewed, and backed by training. We don’t take shortcuts with safety.”

Sample Language for Media Engagement
These phrases help officers speak clearly, confidently, and in alignment with agency values:

  • “Olfact X™ is a tool we use to prevent escalation. It helps us gain control without causing permanent harm.”
  • “This round is part of a broader strategy to protect officers, suspects, and civilians in high-risk situations.”
  • “Every deployment is carefully planned and reviewed. We use it only when the mission demands it.”
  • “It’s not about overpowering—it’s about interrupting. Olfact X™ gives us a moment to act decisively and safely.”
  • “We’re committed to transparency. This round is used under strict protocols and with full documentation.”

What Not to Say

Avoid Saying / Why It’s Problematic

  • “It’s like tear gas” Misleading—Olfact X™ is not a chemical irritant and doesn’t cause respiratory distress
  • “It incapacitates people” Overstates effect—focus on disorientation and withdrawal
  • “We use it all the time” Inaccurate—deployment is rare and mission-specific
  • “It’s harmless” Oversimplifies—requires training, containment, and oversight
  • “It’s just a stink bomb” Undermines tactical value and professionalism

Handling Tough Questions

Q: Is this safe for civilians or children nearby?
A: “Olfact X™ is deployed only in controlled environments by trained personnel. We follow strict containment and ventilation protocols to ensure safety for everyone.”

Q: Why not use verbal commands or tasers instead?
A: “We always start with verbal commands. Olfact X™ is used when conventional tools aren’t effective or would escalate risk.”

Q: Could this be misused or overused?
A: “Every deployment is reviewed. Officers are trained to use this round only under mission-specific conditions, with full documentation and oversight.”

Q: What does it smell like?
A: “It’s designed to overwhelm the olfactory system—not to mimic any specific odor. The goal is temporary disorientation, not discomfort.”

Regulatory and Ethical Compliance

  • Complies with domestic Less-Lethall munition standards
  • Not authorized for use against Hague Convention signatories
  • Deployment must align with agency use-of-force continuum and local statutes

The Science Behind Scent-Based Disruption. Turning Instinct Into Tactical Advantage

Why Smell Works Faster Than Sound or Sight

  • Direct to the Brain - Olfactory signals bypass the thalamus and go straight to the limbic system—triggering instinctive emotional and behavioral responses faster than visual or auditory cues. This makes scent the fastest path to reflexive action.
  • Milliseconds Matter - Scent reactions occur in under 500 milliseconds—often before conscious thought. That’s faster than most reflexes triggered by light or sound, giving officers a critical edge in controlling chaotic environments.
  • Aversion Is Hardwired - Certain smells activate the brain’s avoidance circuits, causing subjects to recoil, pause, or redirect attention—without inducing panic or pain. This makes OlfactX ideal for crowd control, area denial, or non-lethal disruption.
  • “OlfactX™ leverages the fastest sensory pathway in the human body—turning instinct into a tactical advantage.”

Is OlfactX™ considered “non-lethal” or “less-lethal”?

OlfactX™ is classified as a less-lethal specialty munition, engineered to deliver sensory disruption through olfactory overload rather than kinetic injury. While the round is deployed via a standard 9mm platform, its primary effect is psychological and physiological aversion—not physical harm.

The payload consists of a proprietary, non-toxic compound designed to produce an intensely unpleasant odor upon impact. This odor is formulated to trigger instinctive withdrawal responses, including nausea, disorientation, and temporary loss of focus. The active ingredient is a trade-secret blend, and has been rigorously tested to ensure no lasting health effects when inhaled under normal deployment conditions.

Although OlfactX™ is not intended to penetrate deeply or fragment, it remains a ballistic munition. As such, there is a minimal risk of over-penetration or secondary shrapnel, particularly when deployed against hard surfaces or in close quarters. To mitigate these risks, officers must complete certified training in safe deployment protocols, including backdrop evaluation, standoff distance, and target selection.

Environmental & Operational Safety
Non-Toxic & Inert: Safe for use in enclosed environments, including schools, hospitals, and public buildings
No Cleanup Required: The odor may linger for several days depending on ventilation, but the compound leaves no chemical residue and requires no decontamination

  • Compatible with PPE Protocols: Can be deployed in conjunction with standard protective gear without interference
  • Low Fire Risk: Contains no pyrotechnic or volatile components, making it suitable for use in sensitive or flammable environments

OlfactX™ is ideal for scenarios where traditional flashbangs or kinetic impact rounds may pose excessive risk or legal liability. It offers agencies a compliant, scalable, and psychologically effective tool for crowd control, area denial, and tactical disruption—without compromising safety or public trust.
