1. Purpose
To establish standardized procedures for the
authorized deployment, handling, and post-engagement documentation
of Olfact X rounds. This SOP ensures safe, effective,
and legally compliant use in tactical scenarios requiring Less-Lethal
sensory disruption.
2. Scope
This SOP applies to all sworn law enforcement officers, tactical
units, and authorized domestic military personnel operating
under agency jurisdiction. It governs the use of Olfact X
in designated mission profiles only.
3. Authorized Use Cases
- Olfact X may be deployed in the following
scenarios:
- Tactical entry and room clearing
- Barricaded suspect engagements
- Hostage rescue operations
- Riot control and crowd dispersal
- Domestic military operations requiring Less-Lethal
intervention
- Use outside these scenarios requires written
authorization from command staff and legal review.
4. Prohibited Use
- Routine patrol or general-purpose carry
- Civilian use or recreational deployment
- Open-air environments with high wind or poor
containment
- Sensitive civilian zones (e.g., hospitals,
schools) without containment protocols
- Military use against Hague Convention signatories
5. Officer Training Requirements
Prior to deployment, officers must complete:
- Olfact X Familiarization Module
- Scenario-based training (room clearing, crowd
control, confined space)
- PPE drills and ventilation assessment protocols
- Legal and regulatory compliance briefing
- Signed documentation of training completion
6. Deployment Protocol
Pre-Deployment
- Confirm mission profile matches authorized
use case
- Inspect cartridges for seal integrity and
physical damage
- Verify PPE availability and ventilation
plan
- Log round issuance in agency ammunition
tracking system
During Deployment
- Issue verbal commands and visual warnings
(if tactically feasible)
- Maintain standoff distance of 610
feet from target zone
- Fire round toward hard surface or wall near
target (not directly at individuals)
- Allow 12 seconds for payload dispersal
- Enter and secure area while minimizing officer
exposure
Post-Deployment
- Ventilate affected area using fans or open
windows
- Conduct surface wipe-down if prolonged exposure
occurred
- Document round usage in incident report,
including:
- Number of rounds fired
- Tactical context and observed effects
- Any anomalies or safety concerns
- Monitor exposed individuals for adverse reactions;
refer to medical if needed
- Submit internal review for any deployment
resulting in injury, escalation, or media attention
7. Storage & Inventory
- Store in climate-controlled, secure ammunition
locker
- Maintain separation from lethal rounds and
general-purpose munitions
- Conduct quarterly inventory audits
- Report discrepancies immediately to logistics
supervisor
8. Compliance & Oversight
- All deployments subject to internal review
and external audit
- Use must align with agency use-of-force continuum
and local statutes
- Improper use may result in disciplinary action,
civil liability, or criminal review
